We lined up for the rope pull, synchronized our grunts, and immediately discovered that nobody had agreed which direction was “up.”

Lessons learned

  1. Count to three — or don’t. Chaos is also a strategy.
  2. Wear gloves — rope burn is not a medal category.
  3. Blame the wind — it works every time.
